Our Vision and Aims for Maths

Maths is a core subject at Olive Hill and we follow the National Curriculum for mathematics (2014).

Its three main aims are to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately;

  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language;

  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

At Olive Hill, we believe that a deep understanding of maths is an essential skill that provides a way of viewing and making sense of the world. We all need to be able to perform simple mental maths skills, manage our finances, understand data in tables and graphs, tell the time - there are many areas of everyday life in which we use mathematical skills. In addition to this, maths gives us the opportunity to develop problem-solving skills and apply logic and reasoning; skills that transcend the maths curriculum. It is a creative subject that provides the materials and means for exploring other subjects such as Computing and Science.

Our maths curriculum is designed around a mastery approach. Children are taught to be procedurally and conceptually fluent, able to reason and apply logical thinking and to apply their knowledge and skills when solving real-life problems. As maths is a deeply interconnected subject, our curriculum is also designed so that there are opportunities for children to make connections between different concepts as well as to consolidate prior learning.

Underpinning our curriculum is the core belief that all children can succeed in maths. Throughout the school, children are taught in mixed prior-attainment groups and we adapt our teaching to meet the needs of all learners. Lessons are designed so that children can clearly communicate and share their ideas together as well as work independently. Children who grasp concepts quickly are given the opportunity to explore concepts on a deeper level. Children who need support are taught in smaller, fluid focus groups or take part in additional interventions. We recognise that these groups of children are not fixed and will often change day to day, topic to topic.

Lastly, we aim to instil a love of mathematics in our children where positive attitudes, fascination and excitement are fostered. We provide children with the opportunities that they need to build confidence in maths and develop a secure knowledge and understanding which will equip them well for the rest of their lives.
