Our Vision and Aims for French

At Olive Hill, we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. We give our pupils in key stage two the opportunity to learn French as a modern foreign language.

Our main aims are for our children to be able to:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written French;

  • Speak with increasing confidence and fluency;

  • Write at varying lengths for different audiences and purposes;

  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in French.

Each year across key stage two, the children build on the skills that they have previously learnt to help them continually improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation. French lessons are delivered in a fun and practical way through games, songs and oracy to promote a love of learning languages.

Through exposure to and engagement with French, we foster positive attitudes in our children for languages and cultures other than their own. They start to develop an understanding of themselves as global citizens of a multicultural and mutually-respectful world.
