Cognition and Learning

A cognition and learning need is a type of special educational need that affects how a person thinks, learns and remembers information. It can be caused by various factors, such as genetic conditions, developmental delays, brain injuries or environmental influences.

Learning difficulties cover a wide range of needs, including moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD). where children are likely to need support in all areas of the curriculum and associated difficulties with mobility and communication, through to profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), where children are likely to have severe and complex learning difficulties as well as a physical difficulty or sensory impairment.

Specific learning difficulties (SpLD), affect one or more specific aspects of learning. This encompasses a range of conditions such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia.

At Olive Hill, we believe that it is important that you are aware of your child’s attainment and progress in all areas of the curriculum. We will update you regularly through Parent Consultations, but additionally, we will invite you in for a discussion of we notice that your child is not making progress as fast as we would expect. We always welcome you to come and inform us about any concerns that you may have too.

Children with cognition and learning needs may require additional support or adaptations in their education to help them achieve their potential, and sometimes it may be appropriate to invite support from an additional service, such as Learning Support Services (LSS). Dudley Learning Support Service works closely with school and parents/carers by making careful assessments of your child in a range of curriculum areas and then making suggestions of small targets to work towards and guidance on how activities can then be adapted to ensure they are easily accessible for your child in the classroom.
